Château des Roure

The Château des Roure is a medieval fortress sitting on a hilltop in Labastide-de-Virac, built with thick stone walls and towers designed for defense. Its layout includes a central courtyard and surrounding fortifications that reveal how people protected themselves in earlier times.

The site has roots reaching back to the 11th century, though the structure visible today was rebuilt in the 14th century. It served as a stronghold for different groups during religious conflicts and passed through multiple owners over time.

Silk production remains woven into this place's identity through an active workshop on the grounds. Visitors can watch workers handle silkworms and process the material as it has been done for centuries.

You reach the castle on foot via forest paths from the parking area, with some sections being steep. Wear comfortable shoes and allow time to explore the courtyards, towers, and surrounding grounds at your own pace.

The grounds feature a large wooden siege machine that operates during certain demonstrations. This reconstruction shows how medieval forces actually attacked fortified positions.
