Château du Goust, Medieval castle in Malville, France
Château du Goust occupies a divided platform with main residential areas in the north and the outer courtyard in the south. The ruins include a moat system and counterscarp that together define the original layout of the property.
The castle was built in the 15th century by a vassal of the Duke of Brittany to monitor river traffic on the Loire. Its present ruins result from orders issued in the 17th century that ended its role as a stronghold.
The site shows how the castle transformed from a military stronghold into a residential home, especially through changes made in the early 16th century. Visitors can see this shift in the layout of rooms and the surviving architectural details.
The ruins and moat system are open to public viewing since the municipality manages the entire property. Visitors should note that stone remains can be uneven and muddy, especially after rain.
The fortification was deliberately dismantled between 1627 and 1628 on orders from an influential cardinal. This destruction left the fragmented structure that visitors see today.
