Château de la Côte-au-Chapt

Château de la Côte-au-Chapt is a medieval castle in Darnac with a circular tower rising through six levels. An internal spiral staircase connects the different floors, which functioned as both defensive positions and living spaces.

The tower was built in the late 14th century by Ytier du Breuil during the Hundred Years' War to show loyalty to the French crown. The donjon and surrounding walls received official protection status as historical monuments in 1988 and 1989.

The castle displays different building techniques visible in its walls as visitors walk through the tower. These variations in construction methods tell the story of how craftspeople adapted their skills across different periods.

The location sits in a rural area and is best reached on foot. Access is limited, so checking conditions beforehand is wise before making the journey.

The original entrance to the castle was positioned several meters above ground level and was accessed through a specific doorway. Over time, this opening has become a large breach in the wall, revealing marks of past attacks.
