Théatre Lepic, Theater in Montmartre District, France

Théâtre Lepic occupies a pale stone building at 1 avenue Junot, on the corner of rue Lepic and rue Girardon in Montmartre. Its arched entrance holds black-framed double doors with glass panes under a radiating fanlight, topped by a curved black sign reading "THEATRE LEPIC" in white capitals. A stone balcony on twenty-five balusters runs above the doors, with carved figures at each end, and ivy climbs the right side. The 150-seat hall keeps its Art Deco interior from the 1983 filming of Édith et Marcel.

Inaugurated on 13 December 1954 as Théâtre du Tertre, co-directed by writer Georges Charaire and director Pierre Sonnier, it opened with Yves Jamiaque's Habeas Corpus and hosted Eugène Ionesco's early work. After closing in 1975, Claude Lelouch bought a small theatre on the same property in 1982, rebuilt it in 1920s style for the film Édith et Marcel, and ran it as Studio 13 then Ciné 13 Théâtre. His daughter Salomé Lelouch took over in 2003 and bought and renamed it Théâtre Lepic in 2018.

Since 2006 the theatre has hosted the "Mises en capsules" festival of short plays: five half-hour pieces per evening, with newcomers and established directors such as Patrick Chesnais and Niels Arestrup sharing the bill. Alexis Michalik began here, and his Le Porteur d'histoire started as one of these capsules. The programme also covers young audiences, acoustic concerts and short-film festivals.

The theatre stands at 1 avenue Junot, at the corner of rue Lepic and rue Girardon, near the Moulin de la Galette. The hall seats 150 and has no lift mentioned in the sources, so ask about step-free access when booking. The programme mixes young companies, revisited classics, young-audience shows, acoustic concerts and short-film festivals.

The theatre hosted the world record for the longest concert: Canadian pianist Chilly Gonzales played 27 hours, 3 minutes and 44 seconds between 17 and 18 May 2009, an event produced by Salomé Lelouch. Since 2006 the venue has also held the short-play festival "Mises en capsules", where Alexis Michalik premiered the sketch that became Le Porteur d'histoire.
