Commanderie du Ruou, Medieval commandry in Villecroze, France.
The Commanderie du Ruou is a medieval complex with stone buildings, chapels, and defensive structures set among agricultural lands in Provence. The site features a restored chapel and several medieval buildings that remain from the original settlement.
The site was founded in 1155 when local nobles donated land to the Templar order. By the 13th century it had grown into a major regional center for the Templars.
The commandry served as a working center where Templar brothers lived and managed the land together. Visitors can observe how the chapel stood at the heart of their community life and daily activities.
The site is located in a rural setting and is best reached by car. Keep in mind that some buildings remain unrestored and access may be limited to certain areas.
The commandry controlled more than 240 separate land parcels spread across different communes. This far-reaching network of holdings, including vineyards and pastures, made it an economic power in the region.
