Domaine des Treilles, Cultural estate in Tourtour, France

Domaine des Treilles is a large estate in Tourtour that spans hundreds of hectares and integrates agricultural land with olive groves, lavender fields, and vineyards. The property comprises multiple interconnected buildings, an extensive library, and various spaces designed for conferences and collaborative work.

Anne Gruner Schlumberger acquired the estate in 1960 and initiated a comprehensive transformation in which existing buildings were connected through architectural renovations. This project of unification and modernization extended over two decades and shaped the property's present structure.

The estate's name comes from the Fondation des Treilles, created by Anne Gruner Schlumberger, which works for the international development of sciences, letters and arts. Its buildings house her 20th-century art collection, devoted to artists such as Victor Brauner, Max Ernst and Takis. Sculptures were commissioned from Ernst, Henri Laurens, François-Xavier Lalanne and Takis, and Takis's Jardin des Sondes was installed in 1986.

The property sits at about 600 meters elevation and offers various areas to explore, from agricultural fields to buildings with interior spaces. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and understand that this is not a conventional museum but an active working environment with limited public access.

The estate's name comes from the trellises used to train vines, and its landscape was shaped by landscape architect Henri Fisch alongside architect Pierre Barbe from 1960 to 1980. The grounds mix vineyards, olive terraces, almond trees and lavandin with Aleppo and Scots pines.
