Daum, Crystal studio in Nancy, France
Daum is a glassworks in Nancy that has been making art glass and crystal objects since 1878. The workshop uses the pâte de verre technique, in which crushed glass is pressed into molds and fired in a kiln to create colored sculptures and decorative pieces.
Jean Daum founded the workshop in 1878, and his sons Auguste and Antonin expanded it during the Art Nouveau boom. After competitors like Gallé died in 1904, Daum became one of France's leading glass artists.
The name Daum is linked to the School of Nancy, an art movement that translated nature into glass. Visitors today see how craftspeople use traditional techniques to create objects featuring plants and organic motifs.
The workshop has operations in Nancy and a nearby village called Vannes-le-Châtel, where all objects are made by hand. Visitors can visit the shop on Place Stanislas to view and purchase pieces.
In the 1930s, the workshop began using the pâte de verre technique for large window panels instead of small art objects. This application shows how the traditional method expanded into new artistic directions.
