Grands-Moulins de Nancy, Industrial gristmill in Nancy, France
Grands-Moulins de Nancy is a nine-story concrete facility along the Marne-Rhine Canal containing grain storage silos, workshops, and milling equipment. The structure spans a large footprint and displays the functional, no-nonsense architecture of early industrial design.
The facility was built in 1912 and became a major production hub for the region. After destruction during World War II, it was reconstructed and modernized in the postwar years.
The industrial complex received recognition as 20th Century Heritage by the French Ministry of Culture in December 2015 for its architectural significance.
The building is visible from the Marne-Rhine Canal and makes for an interesting stop during a waterside walk. Interior access is not always available, so check ahead to see if guided tours or visitor hours are scheduled.
The Grands-Moulins appears in the background of the painting 'Les Amoureux' by Émile Friant, displayed at the Nancy Museum of Fine Arts.
