Located in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, the museum received 421,373 visitors in 2007 and maintains specialized departments for different historical periods.

The institution houses one of the largest collections of 18th-century clothing from the Age of Enlightenment, alongside contemporary fashion pieces and artistic designs.
