Ermitage Notre-Dame de Font-Romeu

Ermitage Notre-Dame de Font-Romeu, Baroque hermitage in Font-Romeu-Odeillo-Via, France.

The Ermitage Notre-Dame de Font-Romeu is a 17th-century chapel featuring baroque architecture with multiple ornate altarpieces and decorated interior walls. The building sits in the Pyrenees and combines religious function with the artistic decoration characteristic of its period.

The hermitage developed around an ancient spring believed to have miraculous properties that attracted pilgrims to the site. The location received protected monument status in 1928, securing its architectural and historical features for future generations.

The chapel houses a wooden sculpture of the Virgin Mary from the medieval period that draws pilgrims seeking spiritual connection through prayer and veneration. The figure plays an active role in local religious life through annual processions and seasonal ceremonies that still involve the community today.

The hermitage sits about one kilometer north of Font-Romeu town center and reaches via departmental road 618 heading toward Bolquère. The approach is walkable and accessible by car, making it convenient for most visitors to reach.

Every September 8th, a traditional procession carries the Virgin statue to Odeillo church, where it stays until after Pentecost Sunday. This custom links two villages and reveals how religious life in the region has continued largely unchanged for centuries.
