Parc animalier des Angles, Mountain wildlife park in Les Angles, France
The Parc animalier des Angles is a zoo in Les Angles, a mountain village in the French Pyrenees, set in a pine forest at around 1,800 feet (about 1,800 meters) above sea level. Two walking routes of different lengths cross the site, so visitors can choose a shorter or longer tour.
The park opened in 1994 with a focus on mountain wildlife from the Pyrenees. It was created during a period when interest in protecting wild species in French alpine regions was growing.
The park displays animals native to the Pyrenees, including wolves, bears, and lynxes, in enclosures that follow the natural slope of the mountain. Visitors walk through pine forest along marked paths to observe them at close range.
The park is open throughout the year, including in winter when the nearby ski slopes are active. Sturdy footwear and a warm layer are a good idea, as mountain weather at this elevation can change quickly.
The park sits inside an active ski resort, which means visitors can walk through it on the same day they ski nearby slopes. This makes it one of the few places in Europe where you can watch wolves in the snow after a morning on the pistes.
