Espace des Sciences is a science center in Rennes featuring three exhibition halls, an interactive laboratory, and a planetarium. The venue presents displays on scientific topics across multiple spaces designed for visitors to learn and engage.
The CCSTI was created in 1984 and first housed in the Colombia shopping centre in Rennes. It took the name Espace des sciences in 1997. In 2006 it moved into Les Champs Libres alongside the Bibliothèque de Rennes Métropole and the Musée de Bretagne. A 2013 convention with Morlaix Communauté led to a second site in the former tobacco factory, opened in July 2024.
The permanent exhibition Incroyable Cerveau, created by Espace des sciences, follows the earlier Tous vivants Tous différents. Temporary shows change twice a year, with past examples such as Plumes de dinosaure, Chiens & chats, Feu and Les Horloges du vivant. The center also hosts conferences and exchanges with scientists inside Les Champs Libres.
The planetarium seats 95 people under a 14-metre hemispherical screen and runs three to five sessions a day, so check the session times before touring the exhibition halls. The Espace des sciences occupies part of Les Champs Libres, shared with the Bibliothèque de Rennes Métropole and the Musée de Bretagne.
The Merlin Laboratory contains 30 interactive modules where you conduct your own experiments and develop scientific observation skills. This hands-on learning approach works for visitors of all ages and abilities.
