Les Champs Libres, Cultural center in Rennes, France
Les Champs Libres is a building in Rennes that brings together a public library, a science center with a planetarium, and the Museum of Brittany under one roof. The architect Christian de Portzamparc designed the structure so that the three institutions are physically connected to one another.
The complex opened in 2006, bringing together three institutions that had previously been housed in separate locations across Rennes. Their move under one roof changed the feel of that part of the city center.
The Museum of Brittany displays everyday objects, clothing, and documents from the region's past that visitors can see up close. Walking through the galleries gives a concrete sense of how life in Brittany looked and changed over time.
The building sits close to Rennes train station and is easy to reach on foot. Since all three spaces are connected, it is worth setting aside enough time to move through each one without rushing.
In 2023, Les Champs Libres received the Culture Libre label, awarded to institutions that open their knowledge and collections through digital resources. This means part of the content can be accessed online without ever entering the building.
