Forges des Salles

The Forges des Salles is an iron production facility on the southern shore of Lake Guerlédan. The complex includes furnaces, workshops, homes, administrative buildings, and other structures that show how such a factory operated.

The site was created to exploit the rich iron ore deposits in the region and became one of Brittany's major centers for metal production. It employed hundreds of workers and remained in operation until 1877.

The site displays the daily world of workers through preserved homes, a school, and a chapel that reveal how work and family life were closely connected. Walking through these buildings shows how the community was organized around the forge's rhythms.

The site is best explored on a walking circuit that takes you through all areas of the complex. Wear sturdy shoes since the paths are uneven and some sections are on rough pavement.

The furnaces were never dismantled and still stand exactly as workers left them. This unchanged state makes understanding the production process remarkably vivid.
