Fort Benoît, Military fortification in Besançon, France
Fort Benoît is a military fortification positioned north of Chalezeule Woods at an elevation of 365 meters (1,200 ft). The structure features stone walls, covered gun positions called caponnières, and barracks arranged with a distinctive half-buried escarpment design.
The fort was built between 1873 and 1880 to replace an earlier defensive position from the Franco-Prussian War. It became part of a coordinated defense system designed to protect Besançon following that conflict.
The fort's name honors a military officer who oversaw fortifications in Besançon during the 19th century. It reflects how the French military tradition valued individual leaders through geographical commemoration.
The site currently operates as a shooting range with access limited to authorized personnel only. Visitors should be aware that entry is restricted for safety reasons related to the facility's use and structural condition.
When completed, the fort housed 24 cannons that coordinated fire with neighboring fortifications in the area. This interconnected network of defensive positions created a protective ring around the city.
