Église Saint-Martin des Chaprais, Catholic church in Chaprais district, Besançon, France
Église Saint-Martin des Chaprais is a church building in Besançon with a Latin cross layout, rounded transepts, and a 25-meter spire above the crossing. The structure sits beside the Chaprais cemetery and took its current form in the early 19th century.
The original place of worship was founded in the 6th century, but the current building was constructed in 1821 after the previous structure was destroyed during an Austrian blockade. Architect Lapret designed the reconstruction, restoring a gathering place for the community.
The church takes its name to distinguish it from an older place of worship in the Bregille neighborhood and serves as a gathering place for the local parish. The naming reflects how communities used geography to identify their separate religious centers.
The church is located next to the Chaprais cemetery and is relatively easy to find in an established residential area. When visiting, keep in mind that regular services are held, so certain times may be more appropriate for a visit.
The building underwent expansion in 1927 by architect Alfred Nasouki to accommodate the growing congregation. This addition demonstrates how the church adapted to the needs of its expanding neighborhood.
