Fort du Bourcet, Military fortification in Corenc, France
Fort du Bourcet is a military fortification situated on a hilltop between 415 and 478 meters (1,360 and 1,570 feet) in elevation near Grenoble. From this position, it commands views over the Isère Valley and controls approach routes to the city.
Construction took place between 1875 and 1879 as part of a defensive belt around Grenoble designed to protect against invasion. It was built during a period when France sought to strengthen its eastern borders.
The name honors Lieutenant General Pierre Joseph de Bourcet and his military expertise, chosen by the War Minister in 1887. The fort reflects how the region valued strategic defense and military innovation during that era.
The fort sits on a steep hillside, so visiting requires sure footing and sturdy shoes on uneven terrain. Weather can make the paths slippery, so take extra care during rain or frost.
The T-shaped barracks building contains separate sections for personnel and ammunition storage strategically arranged throughout the complex. Few visitors notice the elaborate underground tunnel system that extends deep into the hillside for protection.
