Grand Thur, Mountain summit in Izieu, France
Grand Thur is a mountain near Izieu reaching 758 meters high with a steep northwest face that overlooks the Gland Valley. The gentler southern slopes provide easier routes for reaching the top from the village below.
Limestone stones were extracted from this area since ancient times, with Roman quarries operating near the hamlet of Fay. This ancient extraction work has shaped the visible landscape and left traces still found on the slopes today.
The GR 59 long-distance hiking trail connects Peyrieu and Izieu through the Izieu Mountain, offering extensive walking routes across the natural landscape.
Trails start from Route de la Grande Montagne and follow marked paths that climb gradually across several kilometers to reach the peak. Proper hiking boots and water are helpful, especially for the steeper sections on the northern side of the slope.
The sunny southern side holds a natural area of ecological value with diverse wildlife and plants found in the Jura Mountains. Visitors often discover unusual rock formations and rare alpine plant species while exploring here.
