Mont Gela, Mountain peak in Peyrieu, France
Mont Gela is a 406-meter peak in the Bugey massif, located between the municipalities of Murs-et-Gélignieux and Peyrieu. The mountain overlooks the Rhône valley and forms part of a region rich in wild plants and animals.
Limestone quarrying has taken place on the mountain since Roman times, using a local stone called Choin de Fay to build structures in Lyon and Vienne. This extraction shaped the landscape over the centuries.
Mont Gela forms a natural area of ecological interest where peregrine falcons, eagle owls, short-toed snake eagles, and black kites nest.
A hiking trail of about 7 kilometers leads toward the castle ruins with an elevation gain of around 230 meters. The walk typically takes 2 to 3 hours depending on your pace and fitness level.
Near Golet du Gela stand the remains of an old farm with carved stones now covered in moss. These ruins reveal how people lived in this remote location over past centuries.
