Mont de Cordon, Mountain summit in Ain, France
Mont de Cordon is a mountain in the Jura range located in the Ain region at about 400 meters high. The rock face consists of limestone and marl that formed during an ancient geological period.
Humans used this location in ancient times, as shown by archaeological finds in the nearby cave. During the Middle Ages, a fortress was built on the western slope that watched over river commerce.
The Bonne-Femme cave on the northern slope shows signs of human settlement from ancient times. Visitors walking the paths can observe the rock face with its natural openings.
The simple hiking trails are easily reached from the surrounding villages and pass through different parts of the mountain. Visitors should wear good shoes since the paths go over limestone rock.
The area is designated as a protected natural reserve and serves as a nesting site for several birds of prey. At night, visitors may sometimes hear the call of the eagle-owl, a large owl that nests in the rock crevices.
