Gallia, Renaissance Revival building in Strasbourg, France.
Gallia is a Renaissance Revival building situated on the banks of the Ill river in Strasbourg, featuring facades made from Vosges sandstone and bricks from the region. The structure displays northern European architectural characteristics that define its distinctive appearance along the waterfront.
The building was constructed between 1883 and 1885 originally as an insurance facility with a German company name. It received its current name in 1918 following the First World War to reflect the region's return to French control.
The building hosts a student dining space that became a gathering point for young people in Strasbourg over the decades. Multiple generations of students have met, eaten, and connected here, making it an important part of student life in the city.
The building has been fully renovated and now offers modern student accommodations with updated safety features and services. Visitors can see both the restored interior spaces and the preserved historic exterior facade during their visit.
The structure lost its prominent central gable during the Second World War, an architectural feature that did not survive the period. Historical photographs and records document what this distinctive element once looked like before it disappeared.
