Palais Universitaire, Strasbourg
Palais Universitaire, Strasbourg, University palace in Strasbourg, France
Palais Universitaire is a Renaissance Revival building in Strasbourg that houses teaching and research spaces. The facade is decorated with 36 statues of famous scholars, and a central courtyard with ornate arcades connects the different wings.
The building was constructed between 1879 and 1884 under architect Otto Warth and replaced an earlier academic institution from the 16th century. Its construction marked a turning point in the university's development as a major educational center.
The building houses academic departments and a collection of antique sculpture casts that students and visitors explore daily. It shapes the city's intellectual life through its role as a center for research and teaching.
The building is accessible on weekdays and can be entered with a wheelchair through the north entrance. Keep in mind that this is a working university, so access to certain areas may be limited.
The building hosted the first Council of Europe session in 1949, when 101 delegates from twelve European nations gathered together. This historic meeting made it a symbol of early efforts toward European cooperation.
