Hypogée des Dunes, Underground chapel and burial site in Poitiers, France

The Hypogée des Dunes consists of a semi-buried structure containing stone carvings, tomb chambers, and religious decorations from the early medieval period.

Discovered in 1878 by Father Camille de la Croix, this archaeological site contains approximately 35 burials dating back to the Merovingian period.

The stone reliefs and wall paintings inside the structure demonstrate the craftsmanship and religious expression methods of early medieval French Christians.

The site remains closed to regular visits due to conservation issues, with access limited to four specific days per year through guided tours.

The underground chapel features carved inscriptions, jewelry fragments, and the only preserved crucifixion scene relief from seventh-century France.
