Notre-Dame des Dunes

Notre-Dame des Dunes is a 6.3-meter bronze statue in Poitiers that stands on a cliff overlooking the Clain River with its arm raised toward the city. The figure depicts the Virgin Mary holding the Child and commands the landscape at this prominent location.

Cardinal Pie commissioned the statue after the French defeat at Sedan in 1870, marking a time of tensions between Catholics and Republicans. The monument arose during a period when religious symbols were central to political identity.

The statue depicts the Virgin Mary crowned upon a globe, while the Child Jesus in her arms raises his hand in blessing and holds an orb. This representation reflects the religious meaning that this monument held for the local community.
