The 6.3-meter bronze statue of Notre-Dame des Dunes stands on a cliff overlooking the Clain River, extending its arm in greeting toward the city hall.
Cardinal Pie ordered the construction of this statue following the French defeat at Sedan in 1870, marking a period of political tensions between Catholics and Republicans.
The monument depicts the Virgin Mary crowned upon a half globe, holding the Child Jesus who extends his hand in blessing while carrying an orb.
Access to the statue remains restricted since July 2021 due to structural concerns, with ongoing assessments of both the statue and its foundation.
The statue's placement near the Coligny Rock connects to the 1569 siege of Poitiers, when Admiral Coligny positioned Protestant troops at this location.
