Necker–Enfants Malades Hospital
Necker–Enfants Malades Hospital, Teaching hospital in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, France.
Necker-Enfants Malades Hospital is a teaching hospital in the 15th arrondissement of Paris that combines pediatric and adult medical services across multiple specialized departments. The facility occupies a complex of interconnected medical buildings and provides around 600 beds for patients.
The hospital was founded in 1778 by Suzanne Curchod, who converted a former monastery into a medical facility to address overcrowding in Paris hospitals. It later merged with the Enfants Malades Hospital, creating the current institution that continues to serve both children and adults.
A large mural by artist Keith Haring from 1987 decorates the hospital courtyard and reflects the connection between medical care and artistic expression. The work remains visible to patients and visitors walking through the grounds.
The hospital is located on Rue de Sevres and provides emergency services and specialized pediatric care. Visitors should check entry requirements in advance, as access may be restricted to patient areas due to the active medical operations.
René Laennec invented the stethoscope here in 1816, fundamentally changing how doctors examine patients by allowing them to listen to internal body sounds. This single invention transformed diagnostic medicine and remains standard practice in hospitals today.
