Le Grand Sancy, Ski area in the Monts Dore, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Le Grand Sancy is a ski area in the Monts Dore of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, at the foot of the Massif central's highest summit. Created in 1961, it groups the resorts of Super-Besse, Chastreix-Sancy and Le Mont-Dore, with 84 km of runs: 21 green, 17 blue, 15 red and 5 black, plus 250 km of cross-country trails and two snowparks. Its 35 lifts include a funitel at Super-Besse and a cable car at Le Mont-Dore.

The ski area opened in 1961 with the launch of its first station and the installation of a cable car. Since then, the lift infrastructure has been gradually expanded and modernized.

The area takes its name from the Sancy, the highest summit of the Massif central, at whose foot it lies. It brings together three resorts: Super-Besse, Le Mont-Dore and Chastreix-Sancy, linked since 1962 between Mont-Dore and Super-Besse. Fog, frost, wind and storms sometimes cut that link, so skiers often stay on one side of the massif.

The area has 35 lifts, including a free one, a funitel at Super-Besse and two cable cars at Mont-Dore. Fog, frost and storm can cut the link between Super-Besse and Mont-Dore, so check conditions before crossing. In sheltered zones, chairlifts are preferred for their capacity and comfort.

The Massif du Sancy sits in an isolated mountain region where Atlantic weather systems bring strong winds and frequent frost conditions. This means snow often stays longer and ski conditions can differ noticeably from other Alpine areas.
