Île-de-France tramway Line 5, one of the Tramways in Île-de-France
Île-de-France tramway Line 5 connects Marché de Saint-Denis station to Garges-Sarcelles over 6.6 kilometers (4.1 miles) running through Seine-Saint-Denis and Val-d'Oise. The service uses rubber-tyred Translohr vehicles guided by a central rail to serve 16 stops along the route.
The line opened in 2013 and partly follows routes of older tramways from the early 1900s that were later abandoned or converted to bus service. The project renewed transportation connections in an area undergoing significant urban development.
Vehicles run daily with varying frequency depending on time of day, with trams arriving every five to six minutes during peak times. Stops are modern and accessible with aids for blind and visually impaired passengers and low platforms for easy boarding.
The use of rubber tyres is a first for Île-de-France and allows the tram to navigate very tight curves and move flexibly through urban areas. This makes the line a pioneer among modern French transit systems.
