Ouvrage Kobenbusch, Maginot Line fortification in Cattenom Forest, France
Ouvrage Kobenbusch is a fortification of the Maginot Line located in Cattenom Forest with seven combat blocks and two entrance blocks. These are connected by underground galleries running approximately 30 meters below ground level.
Construction of Ouvrage Kobenbusch started in 1931 and was completed in 1935 as part of a major French defensive strategy. This fortification was designed to protect the border with Germany and represented the military engineering capabilities of that era.
The fortification represents French military engineering expertise of the 1930s, incorporating advanced defensive systems and self-sustaining infrastructure.
The site is maintained by the Association Ligne Maginot du Secteur Fortifié du Bois de Cattenom and offers guided visits to accessible sections. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for cool, damp conditions in the underground areas.
The underground sections now rest beneath the cooling water lake created for the Cattenom Nuclear Power Plant. This unexpected overlay shows how different historical periods have shaped the landscape over time.
