Ouvrage Sentzich, Military fortification in Cattenom, France
The Ouvrage Sentzich is a fortification in the Maginot Line with a single block containing two firing chambers and observation posts. Underground chambers were equipped with two Baudouin generators to ensure complete power independence during operation.
Construction began in 1933 under CORF supervision and was designed to house about 75 soldiers. This fortification was built as part of France's broader defense system developed shortly before World War II.
The fortification shows French engineering from the 1930s with specific technical innovations in defense design. Visitors can see how the layout connects practical needs with the military thinking of that era.
The site sits in a rural area and is best reached on foot, with good fitness helpful for the terrain. Visiting the underground chambers requires care with low ceilings and can be slippery when wet.
The garrison held about 66 soldiers and one officer from the 168th Fortress Infantry Regiment, positioned between two neighboring defense works. This middle position allowed mutual support with adjacent fortifications along the defense line.
