Saint George Palace, Benedictine abbey and historical monument in Rennes, France
Saint George Palace is a former Benedictine abbey in Rennes featuring distinctive stone construction. The facade displays nineteen two-story windows supported by granite arches, topped by a mansard roof with dormer windows.
The abbey was founded in the 11th century but underwent major rebuilding in the 17th century under Abbess Magdelaine de La Fayette. This reconstruction gave the building its current classical form.
The front displays sculptures showing Justice and Peace alongside the coat of arms of Abbess Magdelaine de La Fayette. These carvings reflect the values that mattered when the building was rebuilt.
The garden surrounding the building is open for visitors to stroll through at their own pace. The location is walkable and well connected by local transportation options.
The facade bears engraved letters spelling the abbess's name, commemorating who commissioned the 17th-century reconstruction. This inscription is an unusual way to honor the person who shaped the building into its present form.
