Île Noire Lighthouse, Maritime lighthouse in Plouezoc'h, France
Île Noire Lighthouse is a square-based pyramidal tower standing on a narrow rocky islet off the Breton coast. The structure contains multiple chambers and former living quarters that once housed a lighthouse keeper.
The tower was completed in 1845 following a petition from captains in 1841 to improve maritime safety in the region. Engineer Aumaître designed the structure in 1843 and set in motion an important shift in navigation history.
The lighthouse maintains its status as a maritime navigation point, representing centuries of maritime traditions and safety measures for the local fishing community.
The structure rises approximately 13.60 meters and sits on a narrow, elongated rock formation. Visitors should watch for slippery surfaces and sea spray, especially during rougher water conditions.
The structure was built using granite from Cléder and Île Stérec combined with local sand and limestone. This material choice allowed it to withstand harsh ocean conditions for decades.
