Phare de la Lande, Maritime navigation lighthouse in Carantec, France.
Phare de la Lande is a maritime navigation lighthouse standing on the heights overlooking Morlaix harbor, featuring a square stone tower that rises 19.1 meters and sits 87 meters above sea level. The structure commands views across the entire bay from its elevated position.
The lighthouse began operations in December 1845 following surveys documenting 25 shipwrecks in the area between 1744 and 1775. Its construction was a direct response to the high accident rate plaguing this dangerous stretch of water.
The building displays classic Breton lighthouse design with granite corner details and an attached keeper's cottage alongside it. Visitors can observe the traditional stonework and rural setting from the outside.
The lighthouse is not open to visitors inside, but you can explore the building and grounds from the outside and enjoy views across the bay. The site is best visited from the surrounding elevated area which offers clear sightlines to the water below.
The lighthouse has operated under remote control from a central station in Brest since 1998, eliminating the need for an on-site keeper. This automated system continues to maintain reliable navigation guidance for ships approaching the harbor.
