Phare du Hourdel

Phare du Hourdel is a concrete lighthouse standing on the southern shore of Somme Bay with a cylindrical tower design. It sends out light signals at regular intervals to guide vessels through the bay's waterways.

The original light signal was established in 1840 to help ships navigate the bay safely. After wartime destruction and rebuilding, the current concrete structure became the lasting beacon for the region.

The lighthouse serves visitors as a focal point for watching seabirds that circle above the bay and shoreline. The location draws those interested in observing tidal movements and the rhythm of coastal life.

The site is accessible on foot from the parking area and provides clear views across the bay and shoreline. It's best to visit during stable weather, as coastal winds can sometimes make observation and walking more challenging.

The beacon was built in a way that also serves as a landing reference point for coast guard and rescue helicopters. This dual use allows for rapid emergency response operations in the bay waters.
