Lille observatory of astronomy, Astronomical observatory in Lille, France
The Lille Observatory consists of three buildings with a distinctive brick chimney and an astronomical dome housing a 35-centimeter telescope lens.
Built in 1932 by architects Marcel and Henri Boudin, the observatory replaced an earlier facility established in Hem by industrialist Robert Jonckheere in 1907.
The building displays modern architectural elements from the 1930s, influenced by architect Robert Mallet-Stevens, combining scientific purpose with geometric design principles.
Visitors can access the observatory through Porte de Douai - Jardin des Plantes metro station and participate in guided tours during Heritage Days.
The observatory contains a museum showcasing historical scientific instruments including anemometers, barometers, sextants, and wire micrometers used in meteorology and astronomy.
