Montjuzet, Public park in Clermont-Ferrand, France
Montjuzet is a 26-hectare park that sits on a volcanic hill in Clermont-Ferrand at 485 meters elevation, opening up wide views across the city and the volcanic mountain chain beyond. The grounds contain seven playgrounds, picnic tables, covered shelters, and free parking distributed throughout the space.
After World War I, the city of Clermont-Ferrand created this park as part of an urban development plan, transforming former vineyard land into green space. This transformation reshaped the hilltop and established a public place for the expanding city.
The site displays three contemporary artworks scattered throughout, including a large sphere by Takashi Naraha and a color-changing fountain by Carlos Cruz Diez that visitors encounter while walking.
The grounds are open from 7:15 to 21:00 daily and offer free facilities including restrooms, parking, and multiple rest areas. The various pathways and open areas are straightforward to navigate, though the site slopes gently overall.
The southern slopes contain a Mediterranean garden with its own microclimate where palm trees, cypress, and rosemary flourish alongside four beehives that support local wildlife. This quiet area shows how varied the vegetation becomes across the hillside.
