Hôtel de Fontfreyde, Renaissance mansion in historic center of Clermont-Ferrand, France.

Hôtel de Fontfreyde is a late medieval mansion in the historic center of Clermont-Ferrand organized around two residential wings and a central courtyard. A notable spiral staircase decorated with fluted pilasters connects the spaces, while a covered gallery runs along the courtyard perimeter.

Built in the late Middle Ages when prosperous families constructed such city mansions to display their status, this residence reflects that period's domestic architecture. Excavations in 2001 revealed earlier settlement layers in the cellars, demonstrating centuries of continuous occupation at the site.

The mansion now serves as a photography center where contemporary exhibitions rotate regularly, transforming the historic noble residence into a space for modern artistic expression. Visitors encounter changing displays that bring fresh perspectives on photographic practice and local artistic voices.

The site is free to enter and welcomes visitors during afternoon hours, though it is closed on certain days of the week. Plan several hours to tour the exhibitions at a comfortable pace and explore the courtyard layout at leisure.

The center runs an artist residency program inviting photographers to document the city through their lens, building an ongoing photographic record of Clermont-Ferrand. This growing collection is created on-site and becomes part of the institution's permanent holdings.
