Plan d'eau de la Grande Prairie

The plan d'eau de la Grande Prairie is a 26-hectare lake in Saint-Yrieix-sur-Charente formed from former extraction sites. Its shoreline contains supervised swimming areas, play facilities, and green spaces where the water merges with the surrounding Charente River landscape.

The site transformed from alluvial meadows into sand extraction areas during the 1960s. These quarries were later combined and converted into a recreational lake for public use.

The lake serves as a gathering place where locals and visitors spend time enjoying water-based activities and nature. Boating and swimming are part of the seasonal rhythm here, particularly during warmer months.

The site has parking, shower facilities, and restrooms available during summer months. Visitors should wear slip-resistant footwear since shoreline areas can become slippery depending on conditions and season.

Two mountain biking routes with varying difficulty levels wind through the forests and meadows around the lake. These trails bring cyclists into contact with local plant life and offer changing views of the water.
