Puits de l'Étançon, Coal mine shaft in Ronchamp, France

The Puits de l'Étançon reaches a depth of 44 meters with a diameter of 3.2 meters, making it one of the last mining shafts built in the Ronchamp coal basin.

A tragic mining accident occurred on December 16, 1950, when sudden water infiltration from old mining works resulted in the death of four miners in the Fourchie gallery.

The memorial stone at the site stands as a reminder of the mining heritage, displaying the names of Louis Billequez, Martial Demesy, Marius Jeanroy, and Gérard Kortitzko.

The mining site can be accessed through walking trails that connect to the historical mining circuit of the Étançon outcrops, established in 1997.

The surrounding slag heap has developed into a specialized environment where researchers have identified multiple rare species of fungi.
