Roc des Bœufs is a limestone peak that rises above the surrounding landscape with steep rocky slopes. The summit ridge offers views across the lake basin and surrounding mountain ranges of the French Alps.
The ridge has been part of pastoral routes for centuries, used by herders moving livestock between valley floors and mountain pastures. These ancient passages shaped the trails that exist today.
The summit lies within the Bauges regional nature park and is classified as a type I zone of ecological, faunistic and floristic interest. The protected plants recorded on its slopes include the lady's slipper orchid (Cypripedium calceolus) and the bear's ear primrose (Primula auricula).
The climb is steep and exposed, so sturdy shoes and water are necessary. Weather changes quickly in the mountains, so check conditions before setting out.
The summit is made of Urgonian limestone, and the eastern flank drops in nearly vertical rock slabs. The western side instead has forested marl slopes beneath limestone cliffs. Protected plants recorded here include the lady's slipper orchid and bear's ear primrose.
