Vostrus Stele, Roman funerary stele in Caen, France.
The limestone monument measures 1.78 meters in height and features a carved representation of the deceased holding a cup in bas-relief.
This funerary stele, discovered in Lisieux during 1861 road construction, originates from the Grand-Jardin necropolis excavation site of the first century.
The inscription, written in capital letters, states 'Vostrus, son of Ausus, lived 80 years' and reflects Roman memorial practices in Gaul.
Visitors can examine this ancient artifact at the Musée de Normandie, where it forms part of the permanent archaeological collection.
The stele remains the single preserved funerary monument from the Grand-Jardin necropolis, which yielded over 2,000 complete objects during excavations.
