Vostrus Stele

Vostrus Stele is a limestone monument from the Roman period on display at a museum in Normandy. It shows a carved relief depicting a deceased person holding a cup, created as a lasting memorial.

The monument dates to the first century and was found in 1861 in Lisieux during road construction work. It came from a burial site that held many Roman remains from that era.

The inscription records the deceased's name and age, following Roman burial customs practiced in Gaul at that time. It served as a way for families to honor and remember their dead in the local community.

This piece is housed in a museum collection and can be seen during regular opening hours. Visitors should approach it carefully, as it is a fragile limestone artifact displayed under controlled conditions.

This is the only surviving monument from a large burial site that yielded thousands of other Roman objects. This solitary stone survivor offers a personal glimpse into lives that left behind far more abundant material traces elsewhere.
