La Salette, Mountain settlement in La Salette-Fallavaux, France.

La Salette is a small mountain community at about 1140 meters elevation in the southeastern French Alps, where a sanctuary sits alongside traditional houses. The settlement spreads across rough, green slopes and is crossed by walking paths that lead through the hilly terrain.

The community became known in 1846 when two shepherd children reported a religious appearance on the mountain slopes, which led to the sanctuary's construction. This event turned the place into a pilgrimage site that has drawn people ever since.

The sanctuary draws visitors from around the world who come with deep personal faith to this place. People arrive in groups and alone to spend time in quiet prayer or take part in shared ceremonies.

Multiple walking trails lead from here into the surrounding mountains, with different difficulty levels for various fitness levels. It is wise to wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for changeable mountain weather.

Only about 77 people live permanently in this remote mountain community, yet it receives thousands of visitors each year. This unusual mix of permanent residents and temporary guests shapes the daily character of the place.
