The square was established in 1897 and officially opened to public circulation through a municipal decree issued on June 23, 1959.
The buildings numbered 2 through 10 surrounding the square were designed by architect J. Thevin between 1894 and 1900.

Marshal Pétain maintained his private apartment at this location from 1920, continuing his residence during the Occupation period.
