Saint Peter church of Dreux, Gothic church in Dreux, France
Saint Peter Church is a Gothic building in Dreux that rises 36 meters high, blending elements from late Gothic and Louis XII styles. The facade was completed in 1524 by Clément Métézeau and shows the different architectural periods that came together during construction since 1300.
Construction of the church began in 1300 and it suffered significant damage during the 1421 siege of Dreux. The building took its final form when the facade was completed in the 16th century, giving it the appearance it has today.
The church holds stained glass from five different centuries, showing how artistic tastes changed across generations. The 1614 organ remains playable and fills the space with its sound during services.
The church is easy to reach and sits in the center of Dreux where visitors can walk around it freely. Inside there is much to see, so take time to look closely at the details throughout the building.
Graffiti from the 16th century can be found on an interior wall, left by people who visited the church hundreds of years ago. These marks are a silent record of how long people have been coming to this place.
