Église Saint-Pierre-de-Sales de Marennes, Gothic church in Marennes-Hiers-Brouage, France
The Saint-Pierre-de-Sales church features a towering 85-meter spire, making it the highest bell tower in the Charente-Maritime department of France.
The church, first mentioned in 1047, underwent reconstruction between the 14th and 15th centuries in the Gothic style after damages from the Hundred Years War.
The interior houses maritime ex-votos, statues from the 18th to 20th centuries, and a classified 19th-century choir organ that reflects local maritime heritage.
Visitors can climb 289 steps to reach the top of the bell tower, which provides views across the town and the Seudre estuary.
The bell tower contains four historic bells, including Jeanne-Ernestine from 1886 and Henriette-Marie from 1776, each with distinct tonal characteristics.
