Église Saint-Pierre-de-Sales de Marennes

Église Saint-Pierre-de-Sales is a Gothic church with a distinctive bell tower rising above the town of Marennes. The interior is supported by stone columns and contains an ornately decorated 19th-century organ.

The site was first mentioned in 1047, but major reconstructions took place in the 14th and 15th centuries after war damage harmed the original structure. These renovations gave the building its current Gothic appearance.

Inside, wooden ship models hang as ex-votos left by sailors and fishermen to give thanks for safe returns. These offerings show how central this place was to those whose lives depended on the sea.

Entry to the interior is free, and visitors can climb the bell tower stairs to view the town and surrounding bay. Wearing sturdy shoes is wise, as the steps are steep and tiring at higher elevations.

The bell tower houses four historic bells with different tonal qualities, including two named bells from the 18th and 19th centuries. These bells remain in use today and shape the sound signature of the place.
