Château de la Gataudière

Château de la Gataudière is an 18th century castle in Marennes featuring a symmetrical facade with a central three-bay pavilion and pilasters. The building displays eleven window bays with tall arched windows and a triangular pediment as its crowning feature.

The castle was built in 1749 by engineer François Fresneau de la Gataudière after his return from exploring French colonial territories. His expeditions led to the discovery of the rubber tree, which became central to his scientific work.

The interior displays furniture and decorative pieces from the Louis XIII to Louis XV periods, reflecting French craftsmanship of the 1700s. Visitors can see how these elements shaped the aesthetic of that era.

The castle park of around 20 hectares features an adventure park with activities such as tree climbing, paintball, quad biking, and outdoor laser games. The grounds are well-equipped for multiple recreational activities and easy to navigate.

A Louis XIV fountain sits in the park and appears in France's preliminary inventory of notable gardens. This historical water feature highlights the property's significance in garden design history.
