Plage de Marennes

Plage de Marennes is an artificial swimming basin covering about five hectares along the French coast. The water is regulated by pumping systems to maintain consistent conditions regardless of natural tidal changes.

The basin was created in 1998 to solve the problem of extreme tidal swings affecting the region. This project emerged from the need to provide reliable swimming access in an area where the ocean regularly disappears from shore.

The beach shows how coastal communities solve the problem of tides and create swimming spaces for locals and visitors. It reflects practical coastal living and the effort to make the shoreline accessible to everyone.

The basin can be visited during summer months and when weather permits, with lifeguards and facilities on site. It is worth checking local conditions beforehand, as weather can affect accessibility and comfort.
