Plage de Gatseau, Sandy beach in Saint-Trojan-les-Bains, France.

Gatseau Beach spans roughly 500 meters of sandy shoreline with a gentle slope, positioned at the southern tip of Oléron Island facing south. The wide expanse and shallow approach make it easy for people of different ages to enjoy the water.

Saint-Trojan-les-Bains developed as a seaside resort during the growth of coastal tourism in Charente-Maritime in the 1800s. The town emerged when people began traveling to the shore for the reputed health benefits of seawater and salt air.

Locals and visitors come together at this shore for fishing and boating, drawn by the south-facing exposure that makes it feel special among the island's beaches. The summer rhythm here revolves around water-based pastimes and seaside leisure.

Lifeguards monitor the water from July through August, and restroom facilities are available nearby for visitor convenience. Parking areas sit close to the shore, making access straightforward, though arriving early helps secure a good spot during peak summer days.

This is the only south-facing shore on Oléron Island, giving it views across the bay toward the mainland near Marennes. The perspective from here differs from other local beaches, making the outlook toward the continent something worth noticing.
