The fortress was built in the late 10th century under the rule of the Counts of Toulouse. It was later destroyed during the Religious Wars of the 16th century.

Visiting requires careful footing since the site consists mainly of foundation stones and partial walls. Approach from the elevated side where the remaining structures are most visible.
The fortress changed hands several times between French and English forces during the Hundred Years War. It was later partly dismantled on the orders of King Louis XI.
