Coco Chanel commissioned the villa in 1929, investing 6 million francs in its construction on land previously owned by Monaco's Grimaldi family.
The villa's architect Robert Streitz incorporated design elements from a 12th-century convent, including groups of five windows and a central courtyard with cloisters.

Winston Churchill spent significant time at La Pausa between 1956 and 1958, writing sections of his History of the English Speaking Peoples.
