Hôtel Chambellan

The Hôtel Chambellan is a private residence built in flamboyant Gothic style, featuring a two-story wooden gallery and a ribbed vaulted corridor that runs through the interior. The carved stonework on the facade and throughout the building displays the detailed craftsmanship typical of 15th-century Dijon.

Built in the 15th century, the mansion belonged to Henri de Chambellan, a wealthy cloth merchant who served as mayor of Dijon from 1490 to 1493. The construction of this house coincided with a period when rich merchants used grand residences to display their power and influence.

The facade displays the Chambellan family coat of arms, held up by large stone figures that reflect how medieval nobles used art to show their status and importance. These carved details tell the story of how wealthy merchants wanted to be remembered in their city.

The mansion sits on Rue des Forges in the historic center and is reachable only on foot. Since it remains private property, you can view the exterior facade from the street, but be respectful of the residents' privacy.

Inside the mansion is a stone staircase carved with a sculpture of a gardener carrying a basket, symbolizing the connection between urban nobility and farming traditions. This unusual detail reflects how wealthy residents wanted to maintain ties to the countryside despite their city life.
